What is milk flow?
The flow of milk is an expression that expectant mothers often hear but whose meaning they only really understand once it occurs. To avoid unpleasant surprises, we reveal to you what is hidden behind this famous “milk surge”. When and why?
After giving birth, after 2 to 3 days of regular feedings, milk comes in. At night, hormones are at their peak and this is often when milk comes in.
From now on, your baby will no longer suckle colostrum, the milk produced at the end of pregnancy, but real milk! So, everything changes: the frequency of feedings, their duration but also your baby's behavior at the breast in relation to the habits he has adopted since birth.
What changes? Your baby will feed much shorter (sometimes just a few minutes) and much closer together (sometimes every hour or even less). Milk is produced in greater quantities than colostrum but your baby's stomach is still very small and a few minutes of feeding are enough to sustain it. In addition, milk is less rich than colostrum. Baby therefore digests your milk much more quickly and he will be hungry again 1 to 2 hours later.
And after ? Your baby is growing and with him, his stomach. He will drink larger quantities of milk at each feeding, in less time (20 to 40 minutes), and meals will be spaced out (2 to 6 hours). The number of feedings then varies, depending on the babies and mothers, your rhythm will be different from other mothers.
